Lung Cancer Basics

Like other types of cancers, lung cancer occurs when cells in the lungs begin to grow rapidly in a manner that is uncontrolled. Lung cancer can begin anywhere in the lungs, and it can also affect any part of the respiratory system. Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death from cancer in the United States, so anyone experiencing symptoms of the disease should consult a doctor for an evaluation. Likewise, people who are at risk for lung cancer such as smokers should make an appointment with their doctor to discuss their risk.

A Widespread Disease

Lung cancer may start anywhere in the lungs or respiratory system, or it may start in one place and spread to another. Lung cancer can even spread to different parts of the body including other organs. The respiratory system includes the trachea, bronchus, and bronchioles. It also includes the right and left lungs. The right lung differs from the left lung, though, in that it contains three lobes versus the two lobes in the left lung. This does give surgeons some options when surgery is a possibility for treating lung cancer, as the surgeon may remove part of the lung or an entire lobe, leaving some remaining lung function.

Lung cancer is unfortunately one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in both men and women. There are a few well-established and well-known risk factors that can influenc
